美國國歌

美國國歌同中國國歌一樣，也是從戰火中誕生的。

1812年，美國發起抗英戰爭（War of 1812），這是美國的“第二次獨立戰爭”。1814年9月13日凌晨，律師弗朗西斯-斯科特-基（Francis Scott Key）看到，經過鏖戰的麥克亨利堡（Fort McHenry），硝煙未散，一面美國國旗沒有被英軍炮火摧毀，依然在城堡上迎風飄揚。愛好詩歌的他，情思奔涌，於是寫下了一首詩《麥克亨利堡保衛戰》（Defence of Fort McHenry）。他將詩歌帶到他的姐（妹）夫（brother-in-law）、法官尼科爾森那裡。尼科爾森覺得詩歌跟《阿克那裡翁歌》(The Anacreontic Song)的旋律很相配。那是18世紀英國業餘音樂家在倫敦的社團“Anacreontic Society”的會歌。相當流行。

9月17日後，美國多家報紙陸續刊登配上英國歌曲樂譜的這首詩歌。很快地，歌名被改為“The Star-Spangled Banner”。它可以翻譯為《星條旗》或《星條旗之歌》。
美國另外有一首著名的愛國進行曲，歌名是“The Stars and Stripes Forever”，譯為《星條旗永不落》，是美國作曲家約翰-菲利普-蘇薩（John Philip Sousa）作曲的。而“The Star-Spangled Banner”的曲調是英國作曲家約翰-斯坦福-斯密斯（John Stafford Smith）的作品。

也就是說，我們今天聽到的美國國歌，音樂出自英國人之手。

《星條旗》問世後，迅速廣泛傳唱，多年經久不衰。

1931年3月3日，這首《星條旗》由美國國會通過，定為國歌（national anthem）。

設想一下，若是中國有人提議中國國歌用日本音樂的話，一定會被亂磚砸死。

美國可以說是百無禁忌，或者說是實用主義，或者說是順從民意。既然人民百姓如此喜愛這首《星條旗》，國會議員作為人民的代表，任務當然就是將人民的意願變成法律。

美國在世界上當警察當“城管”，但對本國人民確實非常好。所以美國人民的愛國之情是從心底自然而然湧現的。每次大型的活動，比如體育比賽，總是要請專業或業餘的歌手高唱國歌。全場起立。很多人還會將右手放在心口上。置身於這樣一個感人的場合，任何外來人都會感悟到：美國強大力量來自什麼地方。

《星條旗》詩歌有四節（four stanzas）。通常只唱第一節：
哦，你可看見，透過一線曙光，
我們對着什麼，發出歡呼的聲浪？
誰的闊條明星，冒着一夜炮火，
依然迎風招展，在我軍碉堡上？
火炮閃閃發光，炸彈轟轟作響，
它們都是見證，國旗安然無恙。
你看星條旗不是還高高飄揚
在這自由國家，勇士的家鄉？

同樣是孕育和誕生在烽火年代，美國國歌和中國國歌的歌詞還是各有特色的，從一定程度上反映了各自的特性。
從美國國歌中，可以看到樂觀、勝利、勇敢和自由的信念。

The Star-Spangled Banner

O! say！ can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O! say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”

透過稠密的霧，隱約望見對岸，
頑敵正在酣睡，四周沉寂闌珊。
微風斷斷續續，吹過峻崖之巔，
你說那是什麼，風中半隱半現？
現在它的身上，映着朝霞爛漫，
凌空照在水面，霎時紅光一片。
這就是星條旗，願它永遠飄揚
在這自由國家，勇士的家鄉。

都到哪裡去了，信誓旦旦的人們？
他們嚮往的是能在戰爭中倖存，
家鄉和祖國，不要拋棄我們。
他們自己用血，洗清骯髒的腳印。
那些奴才、傭兵，沒有地方藏身，
逃脫不了失敗和死亡的命運。
但是星條旗卻將要永遠飄揚
在這自由國家，勇士的家鄉。

玉碎還是瓦全，擺在我們面前，
自由人將奮起保衛國旗長招展。
祖國自有天相，勝利和平在望；
建國家，保家鄉，感謝上帝的力量。
我們一定得勝，正義屬於我方，
“我們信賴上帝”，此語永矢不忘。
你看星條旗將永遠高高飄揚
在這自由國家，勇士的家鄉。
